Né le 10 avril 1915, Joe Mason rejoint l'Army Reserve le 10 octobre 1937. Il effectue sa formation de pilote à Kelly Field et se qualifie le 5 octobre 1938 en même temps qu'il obtient ses galons de Sous-Lieutenant. Promu Lieutenant le 2 février 1941, puis Capitaine le 1 janvier 1942, Major le 10 juin 1942 et Lieutenant Colonel le 3 mars 1943, il prend le commandement du 352nd Fighter Group du 18 mai 1943 au 24 juillet 1944. Promu Colonel le 18 novembre 1943, il remporte 5 victoires confirmées en combat aérien au cours de son Commandement.

Resté dans l'USAF après guerre, il commande le 49th FBW du 1 septembre 1951 au 1 février 1952. Il se retire finalement de l'USAF en mai 1967.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Joe Lennard Mason (0-371856), Colonel (Air Corps), U.S. Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Pilot of a P-51 Fighter Airplane in the 352d Fighter Group, EIGHTH Air Force, in aerial combat against enemy forces on 8 May 1944. Colonel Mason's unquestionable valor in aerial combat is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 8th Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces.
