Karl K Dittmer débute sa carrière opérationnelle au cours de la seconde guerre mondiale par un tour d'opérations au sein du 385th Bomber Group (mitrailleur !!). Après avoir repris l'entraînement comme pilote, il obtient ses ailes et ses galons de Sous Lieutenant en 1944 et se trouve affecté au 487th Fighter Squadron / 352th Fighter Group avec lequel il remporte une victoire avec son P-51D 44-14955 HO-I "Dopey Okie".

Resté dans l'USAF après guerre, il sert aussi en Corée où il remporte 3 nouvelles victoires avec le 335th FIS / 4th FIW en 1952. Au cours de sa carrière, il endommage aussi 5 appareils ennemis.
