Né en 1922 à Regina, Rod Smith s'engage dans la RCAF en septembre 1940 et termine son entraînement de pilote en mars 1941. Promu Pilot Officer, il est envoyé en Grande Bretagne où il intègre l'OTU 58 pour y achever sa conversion opérationnelle avant de rejoindre le Squadron 412 en juin 1941. L'année suivante, il est affecté à Malte et décolle du HMS Eagle le 15 juillet 1942 à bord du Spitfire BR140. A son arrivée, il s'aperçoit que son frère Jerry est déjà sur l'ile et qu'il sert avec le Squadron 126. Il est lui aussi versé dans cette unité et remporte ses premières victoires dès son arrivée. Le 10 août, Jerry est porté disparu après avoir remporté plusieurs victoires. De son côté Roderick remporte un grand nombre de victoires au cours de l'été et devient Chef d'Escadrille en octobre, recevant la DFC à la même époque. Le 15 octobre, il est attaqué par des Me 109 et son Spitfire BR471 est sérieusement endommagé, l'obligeant à sauter en parachute avant d'être secouru en mer. Souffrant de maladies divers en cette fin d'année 1942, il doit être retiré du front Méditerranéen.

Rentré en Grande Bretagne, il devient instructeur à l'OTU 53 en janvier 1943 puis à l'OTU 55 de février à septembre 1943. Il retourne au Canada en octobre mais revient à la fin de l'année pour servir avec le Squadron 401 comme commandant surnuméraire jusqu'en mars 1944 avant de prendre le commandement d'une Escadrille du Squadron 412 en avril. Au cours de l'été 1944, il remporte 5 nouvelles victoires et en septembre, il est promu à la tête du Squadron 401. Le 5 octobre 1944, alors qu'il vole en compagnie de 5 autres pilotes, il intercepte et abat en collaboration le premier Me 262 abattu par un pilote du Commonwealth. Juste après cette victoire qui sera sa dernière, il reçoit une Bar à sa DFC pour avoir remporté 6 victoires en l'espace de 4 jours à la fin septembre 1944.

Il termine son second tour d'opérations en Novembre et rentre à nouveau au Canada avant de quitter la RCAF en juin 1945. Après avoir repris les études universitaires, il intègre la réserver en 1946 et deviendra chef d'Escadrille au sein du Squadron 401. Il servira aussi avec le Squadron 400 et le Squadron 411 avant de quitter définitivement la RCAF avec le grade de Wing Commander en 1953

Distinguished Flying Cross la 1 décembre 1942

Flight Lieutenant Smith has been responsible for [the] destruction of six enemy aircraft since his arrival in Malta. One day in October 1942 he led his flight in a determined attack on nine hostile bombers with a large fighter escort, and in spite of intense opposition by the fighters, Flight Lieutenant Smith personally destroyed a Junkers 88, while one Macchi 202 was destroyed by other pilots of his flight. This officer has always displayed the greatest determination and courage and during the recent hard fighting has been an inspiration to all.

NOTE : Public Records Office Air 2/9606 has a slightly different text communicated from Headquarters Middle East to Air Ministry, 4 November 1942 :

This officer arrived in Malta on the 15th July 1942 and since his arrival has destroyed six enemy aircraft with one-half probably destroyed. On the 11th October 1942 he led his flight in a determined attack on nine Junkers 88s with a large fighter escort approaching Malta from the north. Bombers [were] intercepted before they could cross the coast and in spite of intense opposition by enemy fighters Flying Officer Smith destroyed one Junkers 88 while one Macchi 202 was destroyed and another damaged by his flight. He has always displayed the greatest keenness to engage the enemy at all times and his determination and courage during the recent hard fighting have been an inspiration to his flight and squadron.

Since being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Squadron Leader Smith has completed numerous sorties against the enemy. In four days he achieved the remarkable feat of destroying seven enemy aircraft. As squadron commander this officer led 412 Squadron on six missions in three days, during which period it destroyed twenty-seven enemy aircraft and damaged nine others. This was accomplished during the enemy's persistent efforts to destroy bridges in the Arnhem and Nijmegen area which were vital to our ground forces.
