Le sous-continent indifien (aujourd'hui composé de l'Inde, du Pakistan, du Bangladesh et du Sri Lanka) participa largement à l'effort de guerre dans cette partie du monde. Avec une population de 384 millions d'habitants dont 2,5 millions de personnes mobilisées, l'Inde constitua un géant dont l'implication est mal connue. Ainsi, les 700 000 Indiens intégrés à la 14eme Armée qui combattit en Birmanie constituait 75% de son effectif. Les indiens servirent aussi en Afrique du Nord contre les allemands, en Erithrée, en Abyssinie contre les italiens, au Moyen Orient, en Irak et en Iran, en Extrême Orient, et en Italie où ils prirent part à l'assault de Monte Cassino. 30 000 hommes rejoignirent la Royal Indian Navy alors que d'autres servirent dans la Marine Marchande. 55 000 hommes servirent dans la Royal Indian Air force en qualité de personnel navigant ou de personnel au sol alors que plusieurs rejoignaient la Grande Bretagne pour servir dans la RAF. Au total, on estime que plus de 14 millions d'Indiens prirent part,, sous une forme ou sous une autre, à l'effort de guerre entre 1939 et 1945. 36 092 furent tués, 64 354 autres blessés et plus de 80 000 furent emprisonnés. 30 soldats indiens reçurent la Victoria Cross, la plus haute distinction Britannique. |
