Né en 1918, Lowelle Brueland s'engage dans l'Armée de Réserve et débute son instruction en tant que Cadet de l'Air le 24 janvier 1942. Il obtient ses ailes et ses galons de Sous-Lieutenant le 28 septembre 1942 à Luke Field dans l'Arizona. Promu Lieutenant le 22 avril 1943, il est affecté au 355th FS / 354th FG / 8th Air Force en mars 1944. A cette époque, il dispose de 409 heures de vol comme pilote pour un total de 693 heures, instruction comprise.

Opérant en Europe, il remporte un grand nombre de victoires entre janvier 1944 et 1945. Promu Capitaine en avril 1944, il quitte le téâtre des opérations en aoput 1944 et revient en septembre. Promu Major le 1 mars 1945, il termine la guerre avec un palmarès de 14 victoires dont 3 obtenues en collaboration pour un total de 422 heures de vol de guerre.

Le 19 juin 1947, il signe son engagement définitif dans l'Air Force. Transféré au 39 FIS / 51st FIW en mars 1953 avec un total de 1923 heures de vol à son actif, il effectue un tour d'opérations en Corée où il ajoute 35 heures de vol de guerre à son palmarès et deux victoires aériennes contre des MiG 15.

Promu Lieutenant Colonel le 16 mars 1955, il se retire de l'Air Force en Décembre 1968.
