Né en avril 1920 à Vancouver, John Whalen sert au sein du 72nd Seaforth Highlanders Cadets de 1936 à 1939 et dans les COTS comme sergent-sapeur de 1939 à 1940. Sportif accomplit, il occupe aussi différents emplois avant de s'engager définitivement dans la RCAF en octobre 1939. Il débute l'entraînement de pilote en juin 1940 et obtient ses ailes en février 1941 avant d'être envoyé en Grande-Bretagne comme sergent.

Affecté à l'OTU 57, il rejoint le Squadron 411 fin juillet 1941 avant d'être transféré, un mois plus tard, au Squadron 129 avec lequel il remporte ses premières victoires les 17 et 21 septembre 1941. A la fin de l'année 1941, il est envoyé en Extrême Orient et arrive en Inde en février 1942 où il est finalement affecté au Squadron 30 basé à Ceylan. En avril 1942, à l'occasion de l'attaque Japonaise contre le port de la capitale, il parvient à abattre 3 bombardiers en piqué Val au-dessus de Colombo. A la fin de l'année 1942, il est transféré au 101 MU à Calcutta pour 1 mois avant de rejoindre le Squadron 17. En avril 1943, il est affecté à l'Amarda Road Air Fighting Training School avant de reprendre sa place au Squadron 17 à la fin du mois. Au cours de l'été, il prend part aux opération en Birmanie et effectue plusieurs missions de mitraillage des troupes Japonaises. En juillet 1943, il est brièvement affecté au Squadron 261 avant d'être à nouveau transféré au Squadron 34 en août 1943 comme Chef d'Escadrille. L'unité fait mouvement sur Paled en Novembre et entre en action dès cet instant, accomplissant un grand nombre de missions de soutien.

Le 18 avril 1944, James Whalen conduit un groupe de 12 Hurrixanes pour un raid dans le Nord de la Birmanie, mais il est apparemment touché par la DCA et s'écrase dans la jungle à 30 km de Kohima. L'annonce de la DFC apparait en décembre 1945 avec un effet rétroactif antérieur à sa mort.

Distinguished Flying Cross en décembre 1945

Whilst flying with this squadron, Flight Lieutenant Whalen has shown exceptional keenness as a captain of aircraft. He has destroyed three Messerschmitt 109s and three Navy 99s. As leader of a flight or squadron on most exacting operations Flight Lieutenant Whalen has attained much success by his determination and skill.

NOTE : Public Record Office Air 2/9633 has recommendation dated 16 April 1944 noting that he had flown 237 hours 20 minutes on operations :

This pilot has carried out with good success 176 sorties against the enemy, 107 being over enemy territory and 23 by night. He has to his credit three Messerschmitt 109s destroyed and one damaged whilst flying in England and three Navy 99s destroyed whilst operating in Ceylon.

Whilst flying with this squadron, Flight Lieutenant Whalen has completed 87 sorties by day and nine by nine by night and has shown exceptional determination and keenness at all times. His ability as an operational pilot is above the average and the success of many of the squadron's sorties are due to his leadership, determination, enthusiasm , courage and keenness.

The Officer Commanding his station added his comments on 5 May 19144 :

This officer, now missing, was known to me as a most gallant and successful operational pilot, both on defensive and offensive fighter and fighter-bomber work. He has throughout been a source of inspiration to all those who have worked with him, or under his leadership, and I strongly recommend him for the immediate award of the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Air Commodore S.F. Vincent, who commanded No.221 Group, India, wrote on 12 May 1944 :

Strongly recommended. This officer was known to me personally as an excellent leader of a Flight or Squadron on most exacting missions - mostly low bombing over mountainous jungle-covered country. I discussed the recommendation for an award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with his Squadron Commander before his death on operations, and it was submitted then, so this is not being recommended posthumously.

To this was appended a summary of his 176 sorties. These were described thus :
