Né en 1920 à Winniperg, John Mac Kay s'engage dans la RCAF en septembre 1941 et obtient ses ailes et ses galons d'officer en juillet 1942. Retenu au Canada comme instructeur, il rejoint finalement le Squadron 401 en août 1944 avec le grade de Flying Officer. Il participe avec 4 autres pilotes à la destruction du premier Me 262 abattu par des pilotes du Commonwealth le 5 octobre 1944. Promu Flight Lieutenant peu après, il participe activement à l'interception des appareils Allemands lors de l'opération Bodenplate du 1 janvier 1945, revendiquant 3 appareils détruits et 1 endommagé. Après avoir remporté une première victoire sur un Fw 190 et épuisé toute ses munitions, Mc Kay se lance à la poursuite d'un deuxième Fw 190 qui s'écrase seul en tentant d'échapper à son poursuivant. reprenant le cours de sa missions, Mc Kay se met à pourchasser un Me 109 qui, de la même manière, s'écrase en tentant de s'échapper.

Le 28 mars, il attaque seul un groupe de 6 Me 109. Bien que s'étant trouvé dans l'impossibilité de larguer son réservoir supplémentaire, il parvient à détruire deux de ses adversaires. Il reçoit finalement la DFC en avril 1945 et une Bar en mai alors que son tour d'opérations venait de se terminer le 30 avril.

Resté dans la RCAF après guerre, il est promu Squadron Leader en juin 1951 et prend le commandement du Squadron 416 jusqu'en mars 1953, époque à laquelle il effectue un échange avec l'USAF et se trouve envoyé en Corée sur F-86 au sein du 39 FIS / 51 FIW jusqu'au 10 juillet 1951. Au cours de ce séjour il abat un MiG 15 et reçoit l'US Air Medal.

This officer has shown outstanding ability in operations against enemy transport, both in the Battle of the Falaise Gap and in the Arnhem battle. In January 1946 Flight Lieutenant Mackay led his section in an attack against enemy aircraft which were circling his airfield. He successfully destroyed one of the attackers and after expending the remainder of his ammunition on a second, pursued it so closely that he forced the pilot to crash. A few minutes later he repeated this brilliant feat and forced another enemy pilot to crash, thus destroying three enemy aircraft in one sortie. Flight Lieutenant Mackay has always displayed outstanding skill, determination and courage.
