Engagé dans la RCAF, Paul Johnson gagne l'Angleterre et sert au sein du Squadron 421 en 1943 / 44 et devient Chef d'Escadrille en juin 1944. Le 30 juin 1944, il remporte 3 victoires en 2 sorties, lui permettant ainsi d'atteindre le statut d'As. Toutefois en juillet, son appareil touche la cime des arbres alors qu'il mitraille des objectifs ennemis et son appareil s'écrase entraînant sa mort. Il recevra la DFC en septembre à titre posthume.
