Né en 1916 à Omemee en Ontario, Jim Johnson s'engage dans la RCAF en février 1941 et obtient ses ailes et ses galons de sergent en octobre 1941. Il poursuit sa formation au Canada au sein du 2 ANS à Penfield Ridge jusqu'en novembre puis au 1 WS de Montréal jusqu'en août 1942. Promu officer en septembre, il part pour la Grande Bretagne en novembre et rejoint l'AFPU 12 jusqu'en mars 1943. Il est ensuite transféré à l'OTU 51 avec le grade de F/O puis à l'OTU 60 jusqu'à la mi-juin 1943, époque à laquelle il intègre sa première unité opérationnelle, en l'occurrence le Squadron 418. Promu F/L en janvier 1944, il retourne à l'OTU 60 en février comme instructeur après avoir remporté 5 victoires en l'espace de 4 mois.

Après avoir recu la DFC en mars, il retourne au Canada en avril et sert sur la base de Debert, tout d'abord à l'OTU 31 puis à l'OTU 7 jusqu'en juin 1945. Il est ensuite affecté au Squadron 133 / RCAF à Patricia Bay de juin à septembre 1945. Il reçoit l'AFC en juin 1945 et continue à servir dans les Forces Régulières jusqu'en 1964.

En 1994, il vivait toujours dans sa ville natale.

His enthusiasm and keenness in his work have been a great factor towards contributing to a high standard of gunnery training which is one of the most important assets in a crew.
