Né en 1919 à Montréal, Lloyd Chadburn tente de s'engager à la fois dans la Marine et dans l'Armée au début de la guerre mais il est refusé dans les deux armées. Après avoir travaillé un temps pour General Motors et à la Banque de Toronto, il s'engage dans la RCAF en avril 1940. Il décroche ses ailes en octobre 1940 et obtient rapidement une promotion au grade de F/O. En décembre 1940, il est affexté au Squadron 112 / RCAF avant de rejoindre la Grande Bretagne en 1941 où, en juin 1941, il est affecté au Squadron 412. En septembre 1941, il est transféré au Squadron 19 où et devient Chef d'Escadrille avant d'être à nouveau transféré en février 1942 au Squadron 416. Il prend le commandement du Squadron le mois suivant et remporte sa première victoire sur Dieppe à l'occasion de l'opération "Jubilée". En septembre 1943, il reçoit la DFC pour son aptitude au commandement et en janvier 1943 il rentre au Canada pour une période de repos.

De retour en Grande Bretagne en avril 1943, il prend le commandement du Squadron 402 en mai avant d'être affecté au Squadron 403 comme Commandant surnuméraire. Le 13 juin 1943, il devient Wing Leader à Digby qui abrite des Squadrons Canadiens. Il reçoit la DSO en septembre 1943, la citation lui accordant 6 victoires personnelles et la destruction d'un E-Boat le 2 septembre. Son second tour se termine en décembre 1943 et après avoir reçu une Bar à sa DSO, il est affecté à l'OTU 17 comme instructeur avant de retourner au Canada.

Il revient une troisième fois en Grande Bretagne en mai 1944 et prend le commandement du Wing 127 de la 2nd TAF mais le 13 juin 1944, alors qu'il effectue une patrouille dans le secteur des plages de Normandie, son Spitfire entre en collision avec un autre appareil et il est tué. Considéré comme un très grand pilote et surtout comme un leader incontesté, il avait recu la Croix de Guerre avec Palme de la part des Français qui l'avait fait Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur.

This officer has led his squadron with great skill. During combined operations at Dieppe on 19th August the squadron destroyed three enemy aircraft, probably destroyed one, and damaged seven others without loss to themselves. This achievement reflects greatest credit on this officer's excellent leadership and he has inspired confidence in those under his command. He has personally destroyed one enemy E-Boat, probably destroyed a Junkers 88 and damaged other enemy ships and aircraft.

Wing Commander Chadburn has led formations on very many sorties during which sixteen enemy aircraft have been destroyed, six of them by this officer. In addition three E-Boats have been successfully attacked. Wing Commander Chadburn has displayed exceptional leadership and great skill, while his fine fighting spirit have set a most inspiring example.

This officer has displayed outstanding leadership, great tactical skill and courage. Since being awarded the Distinguished Service Order he has led his formation in a large number of sorties during which twenty-three enemy aircraft have been destroyed and many others damaged. Wing Commander Chadburn shot down six of this total himself. Much of the great success achieved during the period can be attributed to this officer's sterling qualities.
