"Tex" Barrick est né à Sweetwater au Texas le 12 mai 1918. Il s'engage dans la RCAF en Ontario à la fin de l'année 1940 et effectue son entraînement de pilote au Canada avant de rejoindre la Grande Bretagne où il termine sa conversion opérationnelle à l'OTU 55.

En septembre 1941, il est affecté au Squadron 17, juste avant que l'unité ne soit envoyée au Moyen-Orient. En raison de l'invasion Japonaise, l'unité est redirigée sur la Birmanie et le Squadron 17 est chargé de couvrir la retraite des troupes Britanniques sur ce théâtre d'opérations, terminant son repli à Loiwing en Chine en avril 1942. Au cours de son dernier engagement, le 10 avril, il abat un appareil qu'il identifie comme un Zero (en fait un Ki 43) et cercle au-dessus de la zone pour tenter de repérer l'épave. C'est à ce moment qu'il est attaqué par trois autres appareils Japonais. Il parvient à endommager l'un des appareils mais il est lui-même touché et doit effectuer un atterrissage forcé au cours duquel il se blesse le visage contre le collimateur. Malgré la douleur, il a juste le temps d'évacuer son appareil avant que les avions Japonais ne viennent mitrailler l'épave. A ce moment là, les pilotes de l'AVG interviennent et abattent l'appareil que Barrick venait d'endommager et repoussent les deux autres. Pris en charge par un docteur missionnaire dans un premier temps, Barrick est envoyé au quartier général de Claire Lee Chennault avant d'être évacué 15 jours plus tard sur l'Inde en C-47.

En août, il reçoit la DFM avec une promotion du grade de F/S au grade de W/O. Il devient officier en novembre 1942 et devient Chef d'Escadrille en mai 1943. Au cours de l'été 1943, il effectue des missions d'attaque au sol dans le secteur d'Arakan mais en août le Squadron fait mouvement sur Ceylan. Il termine finalement son tour d'opérations en décembre 1943 et rentre en Grande Bretagne puis au Canada où il devient instructeur à l'OTU 1 à Bagotville. En octobre 1944, il est affecté au Squadron 135 RCAF à Patricia Bay (Colombie Britannique - Canada) jusqu'à la dissolution de l'unité en octobre 1945.

En 1994, John Barrick vivait toujours en Alabama.

Distinguished Flying Medal en août 1942

During the campaign in Burma this airman displayed exceptional keenness to engage the enemy. During raid in March 1942 he destroyed an enemy fighter in the air and probably destroyed another fighter and damaged a bomber on the ground. During another engagement he shot down an enemy aircraft which was closing in on one of his fellow pilots. Sergeant Barrick himself was attacked by two fighters during the combat, his engine failed and he was compelled to make a landing. Although almost blinded by oil he succeeded in his purpose without the assistance of flaps. The enemy continued to fire at him whilst he was on the ground. Although suffering from shrapnel splinters and the effects of hot oil on his face, chest and arms, Sergeant Barrick walked for some two hours until he reached some Chinese troops. Throughout he displayed great courage and fortitude. He has destroyed five enemy aircraft.
